James Oldham Treatment Center
The 78-bed James Oldham Treatment Center (JOTC) at Triumph Treatment Services is one of the largest men-only facility of its kind in Washington State, and the only one in the entire Central Washington region. JOTC serves approximately 800 (and up to 1,000) men each year (the average age range is 20 to 40), and is located in the small rural town of Buena, WA (population 990).
The aging JOTC facility was built in the 1940s-1950s and is in desperate need of repairs and renovation to address air and water quality, safety, and sanitation to provide safe treatment services for men that address substance use treatment and recovery, and mental health issues.
Several grants have allowed Triumph to address health and safety issues, and now there is an opportunity to bring the community in and improve the fitness center space for men in residential treatment.
Currently, the fitness center is a small, shared space that includes an old weight machine, some small free weights, poor lighting, old carpet and paint, a recently refinished pool table, and a storage area for client belongings.

Stop the Cycle
A life in recovery requires a new set of coping skills, as well as learning healthy ways to spend free time. The fitness center helps men in residential treatment start to establish routines in physical fitness.
Build Community
JOTC is unique in that it one of the few men-only treatment centers across the state. The fitness center provides an opportunity for clients to build comradery and community with other men also in early recovery.
Provide an Essential Space
The fitness center is one of only three common areas inside the building that can be used during free time from group and individual counseling sessions. It is used by 25-50 men per day, 365 days per year.
After a career in the Navy SEAL teams and more than a decade as a licensed trauma therapist, I can say unequivocally that perceived weakness is a debilitating fear amongst the strongest of men, impacting both physical and mental health and acting as a barrier to seeking services. Everyday Triumph Treatment Services helps struggling men recognize that substance use is not a weakness and recovery takes the courage of a warrior. The access Triumph provides for men with addiction challenges reaches every corner of Washington State and is available 24/7/365.
