The goal of PTSD Awareness Month is to spread awareness about PTSD symptoms and effects, as well as advance the discussion about diagnosis, treatment, and care for those suffering from the effects of trauma

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event such as combat, sexual assault, violence, auto accidents, and much more.
After such events, a person may start suffering from symptoms if they were unable to process what happened to them or what they witnessed. The symptoms might include:
- Disturbing memories
- Nightmares
- Have trouble sleeping
- Feel irritable or angry
- Have trouble concentrating
- Feel hyper-vigilant or on guard for fear of danger
- Experience flashback memories

Substance Abuse
Those who suffer from PTSD are 2-4x more likely to have a subtance abuse disorder.

8.6 million adults have PTSD in a given year in the United States, and between 7 and 8 out of every 100 Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their life.

Women are 10 percent more likely to suffer PTSD because they are more likely to experience sexual assault or child sexual abuse.
